Promoting your website

Step 5
Promoting your website
reaching your target audience

Targeted search engine traffic has always been the most valuable traffic for online businesses because it brings people to your site who are actively searching for something you offer.

It used to be the only way to gain exposure on the search engines was to submit your site to the hundreds of available search Web sites and place special “meta-tags” in your page so the search engine robot will index you properly. After that, you’d just hope for good placement.

This has all changed with two investions: Google algorithm and keyword bidding. Google ranks your site according to how many other relevant, popular sites link back to you. The more relevant and more popular the sites that link to you, the higher you will place in Google’s regular search results. Aside from that, there are the paid results explained below.

Keyword bidding involves bidding on keywords relevant to your site against other companies for top placement in people’s search results. You only pay when someone clicks to go to your site, and you determine the amount to bid. So a website bidding the highest amount (let’s say they bid 50 cents per click) will be #1 in search results, while a website bidding 49 cents per click would appear #2, and so on. All this is explained more in the example below.

There are many companies offering a keyword bidding service and more popping up everyday. However, the dominant players in the field currently are Google.com and Yahoo.com.
